Jerusalem Gay Parade:: Israel’s democracy at stake

Personal Jabber: Yes, i know i am to blame for not writing enough in English lately, been too busy with other aspects of my life, personal, professional etc. I’ve started to Teach at the IDC, started to Write another Hebrew blog (which i don’t maintain well as well), started to take high profile cases and started a new relationship.

In two days time, at 11:00, the Gay Pride Parade is scheduled to start in Jerusalem, in a different route than the one scheduled and with more people demonstrating for and against it. Theoretically, this is a victory for democracy, where every person which has an opinion can express it with no problem. however, if you look at the riots which sprouted all over Jerusalem by ultraorthodox jews against it, you may think differently.

When i saw the images on the net of the riots i was shocked.  i did not believe that this is the Jerusalem i knew. it seemed more like Kosovo or any other place where the police are unable to handle the mob.

Another thing that struck me is the reason these people are protesting. They are protesting against free speech and freedom of movement in the name of personal security. however, the rioters who protest against the parade are the ones insighting the riots and calling for the cancellation of the parade. They are using terror against us.

I am not gay; that is one of the reasons that my friends do not understand why am i going this Friday. I had to explain to them that the fight is not only for gay rights, and not only for their equality, but for the freedom of expression in Israel and for the rule of law.

If the riots will not be taken care of by the police, it would be like an Israeli Hizbuallah (party of god, in the ironic aspects, again)  has sovereignty over some parts of Israel and the Israeli law does not apply there. it will be giving up on democracy.

We have to be there, just in order to show that we care, just to show that we support our country and that no one could be silenced here.
